Southampton has taken a massive leap towards survival in the Premier League. The Saints managed to win away at one of their relegation rivals Swansea City. Manolo Gibbiadini scored the only goal of the game, which has moved Southampton further away from the relegation zone, while the Swans seriously have to fear the drop.
Both teams had 33 points before the game, with Swansea on a better goal ratio. The home side could have secured their stay in the Premier League next season with a win, but were left empty handed after ninety minutes. In a drab match, Southampton was the lucky side to score the only goal of the game.
Fifteen minutes before the end of the game Gabbiadini became the hero of the night after Charlie Austin’s shot was initially saved by Lukas Fabianski. The Italian was a free man to tap the ball over the goal line to give Southampton the lead. Swansea then tried to force an equalizer, but Southampton managed to hold on to the small lead.
With the win Southampton looks to be safe, while Swansea City will need help from Arsenal and Chelsea. If both top teams beat Huddersfield and the Swans beat Stoke City on the final game day of the season, Swansea will stay in the Premier League. West Brom has been officially relegated after Southampton’s win.
