Swansea defender Alfie Mawson will not be going to the World Cup with England after undergoing surgery to his knee. The 24-year-old discussed the procedure with England boss Gareth Southgate and after hearing was unlikely to be selected for the squad travelling to Russia, Mawson decided to push through the surgery.
Mawson is expected to be out for between six weeks and two months and that is why the defender wanted to undergo the surgery as soon as possible. Mawson, whose future at Swansea is in doubt, will now be fit in time for the season.
After Swansea relegated from the Premier League last Sunday, Mawson’s future at the club remains unclear. The centre-back had an impressive season for the Swans and had attracted the interest from several clubs, including West Ham United and Everton.
