Dimitri Payet says he has no regrets of playing the Europa League final for Olympique Marseille, despite an injury. The French midfielder is set to miss the World Cup because of the injury and says he had been fully aware of the risks he took by playing the final.
Payet left the pitch against Atletico Madrid after just half an hour and saw from the sidelines how his team were trashed by the Spaniards (3-0). Three days after the final France national manager Didier Deschamps announced his 23-man squad for the World Cup and confirmed Payet was out because of the injury.
“When you are a professional player, the France team is above all, it’s true,” Payet wrote on Instagram. “But Marseille is in my heart and if it is necessary to do it again tomorrow, after tomorrow, in six months, in one year, I would do it without question. “I repeat, I love this club and I am ready to make sacrifices for it… I was fully aware of the risks I was taking and I fully assume the consequences.”
