Chelsea sign Kovacic on a season-long loan from Real Madrid

Mateo Kovacic

Chelsea have signed Mateo Kovacic on a season-long loan from Real Madrid. The Blues have confirmed the arrival of the Croatian on their official website. Kovacic’s transfer is part of the transfer for Thibaut Courtois, who completed a €35m move to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Kovacic wanted to leave Real Madrid as he wanted to play more regular football and hopes to find it at Stamford Bridge under Maurizio Sarri. Kovacic completed a move to Real three summers ago from Internazionale and has made 109 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring 3 goals and providing 8 assists.

It is unclear if Chelsea also have an option to buy Kovacic next season, but that seems unlikely. Madrid still considered the Croatian to be a long-term replacement for Luka Modric and want to keep him at the club. Kovacic could make his Premier League debut for Chelsea on Saturday when Chelsea will play an away game at Huddersfield Town.
