Fresh Sevilla signing Munir el Haddadi has claimed that FC Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde was forbidden to select him by the club’s hierarchy after the forward decided not to sign a new deal. Munir completed a €1m move to Sevilla last week, ending a frustrating first half of the season.
“When I returned from holiday [at the start of January] I told the club that I did not want to renew,” he told reporters on Monday at his Sevilla presentation. “The coach [Valverde] told me that he was forbidden from counting on me by those above him. I kept working and I was lucky to come before [June] to Sevilla.”
Munir has already made his debut for Sevilla in the club’s disappointing 2-0 LaLiga defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. The Spain international could make his first start for Sevilla on Wednesday as the clubs now hosts Athletic in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 second leg. The first leg was won by Sevilla 3-1.
