Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt has joined Spanish club Celta Vigo on loan for the rest of the season. The Dutch defender was a first team regular last season and in the first half of the season, but fell down the pecking order under Ralph Hasenhuttl since the German took over from Mark Hughes in November.
A Southampton statement read: “The move will allow him to gain additional playing time between now and the end of the season, while also further helping [Ralph] Hasenhüttl to achieve his aim of trimming the first-team squad this month. The club would like to wish Wesley good luck for the rest of the season.”
Hoedt signed for Southampton in the summer of 2017 from Italian side Lazio for a reported €17.5m fee. He made 45 appearances for the Saints, scoring one goal. At relegation battlers Celta de Vigo, Hoedt will be joining his former Southampton teammate Sofiane Boufal, who is on a season-long deal at the Balaidos.
