Man Utd legend explains why exciting strike starlet needs to up his game

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has called for Mason Greenwood to improve his work ethic in training if he wants to become a regular.

Greenwood is enjoying a breakout season at Old Trafford, having already reached 10 goals in all competitions despite only making two starts in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised the 18-year-old for his natural finishing ability, but back in November admitted he would need to be more consistent in first team training to warrant more starts.

“Mason is going to have a very big career, but sometimes is not the right time to play him,” Solskjaer said at the time.

“He knows why he hasn’t played as much. We’re taking our time with him. It’s been a difficult period. Anthony [Martial] has been away, to put all the weight on his shoulder wasn’t right either.

“I think we are finding the right balance between playing him, resting him and training him. He needs to learn the man’s game.

“He’s gone up from the Under-18s last year, now he’s training with the first team every day and you can’t just turn that switch on and off.

“You’ve got to perform every day if you are going to be accepted by a group like this.”

Now, Solskjaer’s former teammate Andy Cole has backed up those claims, revealing his delight at seeing the progress Greenwood has made, but warning him to “give a bit more”.

“I’ve been very impressed with him,” Cole told Goal.

“I can remember when he joined as a scholar and I had to do an induction day and everyone was telling me what a player he was going to be.

“To have seen him do his induction day and then play with the kids and now the first team, you can just see the quality he has. Long may it continue – as long as it doesn’t go to his head.

“Ole has come out and mentioned that he doesn’t train the best. When you are that age you have to train a little better than you think you are working. You’re young and still learning your trade so you have to give a bit more.”

Meanwhile, in other Manchester United news, Jamie Carragher has suggested that Monday’s game against Chelsea will give a truer reflection of Bruno Fernandes’ potential.

The attacking midfielder finally joined United from Sporting CP in January after a saga that stretched over multiple transfer windows, and made a fairly positive impression on his debut against Wolves.

However, Sky Sports pundit Carragher thinks the midfield will be a key area in deciding where his next game against Chelsea is won, and that Fernandes will have to prove his worth there.
