Olympique Lyon hope to open contract talks with their star forward Memphis Depay despite rumours of him leaving the club this summer. The Dutch international is currently recovering from a heavy knee injury, but could be returning to full fitness within a matter of weeks.
Lyon Sporting Director Juninho discussed the future of 26-year-old Depay in a press conference. “When you lose a big star to injury with 18 months remaining on his contract, that is a challenge. Memphis is very important to us, we want him to stay and we have begun talking about a contract extension.”
“He really enjoyed himself taking on the captain’s armband. He is a real leader. He has returned to training with the whole squad, I hope that we will be able to find a solution with a contract extension”, Juninho continued.
“You know that after six months without action, the players take time to get back into shape, but in a match he can help us with his talent and hunger. I think that he will be ready to play against Juventus (in August), even though it will be Rudi who decides. Maybe he can help us win matches like that and if he feels that there is a real project for him, maybe he will decide to stay.”
