FC Barcelona could be without midfielder Frenkie de Jong for the remainder of the season after the Dutch midfielder suffered a calf injury. The 23-year-old Dutch international has been a regular face in the centre of the park at Barcelona since he joined from Ajax last summer.
The club released a statement on Sunday about De Jong’s injury: ‘The clinical follow-up on Frenkie De Jong has uncovered an injury in the soleus of his right leg. The evolution of the injury will condition the player’s availability,’ the statement on the club’s official website read. The club has not made a statement on a possible return date for De Jong, but there are fears he will be out for several weeks, missing out the final games of the season.
Missing De Jong in this crucial part of the season is yet another blow for Barcelona after losing top spot in La Liga to arch rivals Real Madrid. While Barcelona played out a disappointing 0-0 draw against Sevilla, Madrid picked up a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday night. Both teams are on equal points, but Real are top of the table after getting the better of their El Clasico rivals in the head-to-head games this term.
