French outlet Le10Sport have claimed that Newcastle United have made an official approach to sign Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko. The French international is currently on loan at AS Monaco, who have an option to buy him permanently. The report claims that Monaco is unable to activate the clause due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Bakayoko is now set for a return to Stamford Bridge, but he is already aware that he isn’t in manager Frank Lampard’s plans. The midfielder isn’t short of options, with West Ham United, AC Milan, Watford, Paris Saint-Germain and OGC Nice already linked with interests in his services.
Newcastle, however, have now emerged as favourites to sign Bakayoko. The Magpies are close to having new owners with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund looking to complete their take over before the end of July. The new owners are ready to take the club to the next level, with Bakayoko being one of the first ‘big name’ players to move to the Toon.
The 25-year-old could welcome a new setting and a return to the Premier League after failing to impress for Chelsea in his first and only season for the club. It is believed that Chelsea would be willing to accept bids in the €35m range for Bakayoko, who has a contract until the summer of 2022.
