David Luiz signed a new one-year contract extension at Arsenal last week and the news about his deal caused some consternation among fans of the club. The former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea defender has experienced a terrible season at Arsenal with his absolute low in Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester City last month.
With his deal running down and expiring on June 30th, many expected Arsenal not to offer him a new deal. Luiz, however, signed a new one-year deal with the club. According to The Telegraph, the main reason for his extension is a major wage cut at the Emirates. Luiz has accepted to drop his wages in order to stay at Arsenal.
The report claims Luiz was on a €150.000 a week contract at Arsenal and that he has agreed to a ‘significant’ cut to facilitate an agreement. With the savings the club could make Arsenal was then able to secure the signings of Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares, who had been on loan from Southampton and Flamengo respectively.
