Bayern Munich’s Alphonse Davies has been the big surprise in this season’s Bundesliga. The 19-year-old Canadian joined the German giants from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019 as a forward but is now considered to be one of the best left full-backs in Europe. The speedster hails Bayern boss Hansi Flick for his first full season at Bayern.
“When I first came to Munich, I came here to play on the wing. But things can change,” Davies told Sky Germany. “Being left-back is great. Especially with a guy like David Alaba next to me, a world class left-back who explains things to me. It’s really interesting.”
“It was really a challenge at the beginning,” added Davies. “I came to Munich as an attacking player. Of course I wanted to go forward but I also knew that I had a responsibility at the back. I had to learn the defensive role and also more about how to position myself.”
The Canada international has very positive words for Flick. “He believed in me. He plays me every game and sees my qualities. As a young player, he talks to me a lot and gives me advice. I’m glad that he extended his contract.” Davies has made 38 appearances for Bayern Munich this season, scoring 3 goals and providing 9 assists.
