FC Barcelona will sack head coach Quique Setien if the manager fails to either win La Liga or the Champions League, reports Goal. It is believed that Setien, who has been with the club since January following the sacking of Ernesto Valverde, has already lost the confidence of the dressing room, while the board is also unhappy with the team’s performances and quality of play.
The report claims that Setien has been summoned by the Barcelona board after the team failed to beat Celta de Vigo (2-2) while Real Madrid beat Espanyol 1-0 and now hold a two point lead in La Liga. It is believed that the former Real Betis manager has been told the team’s performances must be improved before the end of the season, while the board also expects Barcelona to win at least one major trophy.
Setien was given a two-and-a-half-year contract in January, but as things stand at the moment he will not be able to complete more than a few months of that contract. Setien’s assistant Eder Sarabia is also very unpopular with the players, which was spotted by the Spanish media during the Celta game. Lionel Messi had an obvious moment with the assistant, increasing rumours about his unpopularity with the team.
It will be a hard couple of weeks for Setien, who was never the club’s first choice to replace Valverde in the first place. Barcelona had high hopes to land Ronald Koeman as their new coach, but he decided to stay with the Dutch national team. Their number two target Xavi Hernandez turned down his former club because he felt he ‘wasn’t ready’ to coach a big club like Barcelona.
