Wesley Sneijder could be following Arjen Robben and make a shock return to football as there are rumours the former Dutch international has been talking with his hometown club FC Utrecht. Several Dutch media are reporting that Sneijder would be open for a return to the Eredivisie next season.
On Thursday Sneijder was surprised by a group of Utrecht fans, who handed him a signed shirt with the number 10 and Sneijder’s name on the back. The former Real Madrid and Internazionale midfielder then admitted to the fans he has held talks with Utrecht about a possible return to football.
Sneijder ended his career in August 2019 as a player of Al-Gharafa. The former midfielder enjoyed a successful career which lead him passed clubs like Ajax, Real Madrid, Internazionale and Galatasaray. As an Inter player Sneijder won the Champions League and with the Dutch national team he reached the 2010 World Cup final and third place at the 2014 World Cup.
With his shock decision to return to football, Sneijder could be following the footsteps of his former teammate and friend Arjen Robben. The right winger shocked the footballing world last week by announcing his return to professional football at his boyhood club FC Groningen. The former Bayern Munich forward decided to end his career in 2019, but decided to come out of retirement for the 2020/2021 season. Over the past weeks Robben was seen training at Bayern Munich, which fueled rumours for a return to football.
