The German Bundesliga will start their new season mid-September, the German football association DFB have confirmed on Friday. League and cup calendars from all over the world had to be changed due to the coronavirus pandemic, with several big leagues ending in July.

The DFB have now confirmed that the 2020/2021 season will start on September 11 with the first round of the DFB Pokal. A week later the Bundesliga and all other German leagues will kick-off their campaigns. The year 2020 will then end with the second round of the DFB Pokal on 22-23 December and the final league games will be played a week earlier.

Due to the late start of the season, the winter break has been shortened, as the top two tier leagues will restart for the second half of the season on January 14, only three weeks after the final games in December. At the end of the season, the DFB Pokal will be played on May 13, while the final matchday of the Bundesliga will be May 22.

Plans are subject to change but the calendar is expected to proceed in this manner for 2020/21.
