Lionel Messi has yet set another record in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday after the FC Barcelona forward became the first player in the history of the Spanish league to score 20 and assist 20 goals or more in the same season. Messi provided the assist on Arturo Vidal as Barcelona secured a small 1-0 win over Real Valladolid.
Messi already broke his own record when he added a 19th La Liga assist to his tally last week, but the Argentinian ensured he would add yet another page to his record book. Not only is he the first player to have reached 20 assists in the same La Liga season since Xavi in 2008/2009, but he is the first player in history to have combined that total with 20 or more goals.
The 33-year-old is only the second player to achieve these numbers in one of Europe’s top five leagues in the 21st century, after Thierry Henry scored 24 goals and provided 20 assists for Arsenal in the 2002/2003 Premier League season. Messi currently has 22 goals and is the leagues top goal scorer, four clear of Karim Benzema.
