Newcastle boss blasts VAR decisions after two penalty decisions

Newcastle United fell to a 2-1 defeat against Watford on Saturday, conceding two penalties. After the game Magpies boss Steve Bruce was angry with the decisions made by the referee, questioning why the VAR wasn’t used to overrule the decision of the referee to award Watford two penalties. Matt Richie and Javier Manquillo were both penalised for a foul in their own area. Bruce felt the pair were hard done by.

“Unfortunately, we’re not getting the right decisions,” Bruce claimed afterwards. “This is about the fourth time in a few days. I’m not one to make excuses but to lose games the way we did there, with big decisions, is difficult to accept. I don’t know why we don’t ask the referee to look at the monitor. Why’s he got to go to VAR in the studio where someone else is just going to back him up?”

“What’s the point of sending it to VAR when they’re never going to overturn anything anymore? Let the referee come and have a look on the monitor. Is there enough contact there? Is there really? Or is he looking for it to fall over? I mean, there’s contact all over the pitch. All this nonsense we’ve got with VAR. I thought it was supposed to be clear and obvious,” he added.
