Ajax ready to fight off Chelsea as Dutch giants offer new deal to Andre Onana

Ajax are prepared to fight off Chelsea to keep Andre Onana in Amsterdam for at least another season. The Dutch giants accepted the fact that the 24-year-old would be leaving the club this summer, but due to the corona crisis pandemic Ajax are yet to receive an offer. Director of Football Marc Overmars has seen an opportunity to keep the goalkeeper at Ajax for at least another season and is preparing a contract offer.

Onana’s current deal at Ajax expires in the summer of 2022 and it is believed that Overmars will be offering the goalkeeper to extend that deal with one season and he will be offered a wage hike. It is believed that Onana’s agent Albert Botines will be travelling to Amsterdam this week to open talks with the club, while they will also keep their eyes open on the current market.

The Cameroonian international has been Ajax’s first goalkeeper for the past few seasons and during the second half of the 2019/2020 season, Onana has expressed the desire to find a new challenge outside of Holland. The goalkeeper has been linked with numerous clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona and Chelsea. The Blues appear to be the most interested in signing Onana, as the club is actively looking to replace the disappointing Kepa Arrizabalaga.

However, de Telegraaf reports that whilst Chelsea are unhappy with Kepa the club is not able to meet Ajax’s €40m price tag at the moment. Meanwhile The Blues are also chasing Bayer Leverkusen‘s Kai Havertz and would like to finish the transfer of the German midfielder first before looking at a replacement for Kepa. This could result in Onana staying at Ajax for another season.
