A potential transfer blow for Arsenal as Thomas Partey is set to sign a new and improved contract at Atletico Madrid. The Ghanaian international is looking to double his current wages at the club, while Atletico will also be increasing his €50m release clause to at least €100m, reports AS.
The 27-year-old has developed into one of Atletico’s leading midfielders over the past few seasons and it is believed that Diego Simeone had urged his board to offer the midfielder a new contract. Talks for a new deal were postponed to take place after the season, but AS now reports that the player and club have reached an ‘agreement in principle’.
With that agreement they will finalise the talks once the La Liga season has concluded next week. Atletico is still fighting to finish in third position with Sevilla, while Los Rojiblancos already secured a ticket for next season’s Champions League. Partey developed through Atletico’s own academy and has played 183 games for the club.
