Tottenham Hotspur has taken another step towards securing European football through the Premier League. Jose Mourinho’s side battled their way to a 3-1 win away at Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Manchester City beat Bournemouth 2-1, with the Cherries now in immediate danger for relegation.
Newcastle United – Tottenham Hotspur 1-3
Newcastle was the better side at their own St. James Park during the first half, but would were trailing when the whistle blew for half-time. Spurs forward Heung-Min Son opened the score with a shot that was unstoppable for Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Ten minutes after the break Newcastle equalised through a goal by Matt Ritchie.
After the goal Mourinho sent Steven Bergwijn on the pitch and the Dutch international had an immediate impact. Only three minutes after he entered the pitch he assisted Harry Kane, whose diagonal header meant his 200th goal of his career. In the dying moments of the game Kane scored Tottenham’s third of the night and his 201st goal of his career.
Manchester City – Bournemouth 2-1
Man City boss Pep Guardiola decided to leave his stars out of the starting eleven for the match against Bournemouth. However, even without Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling, City dominated the game and had great start to the game. David Silva opened the score with a wonderful free kick after six minutes of play. Five minutes before half-time Gabriel Jesus doubled City’s lead after an assist by Silva.
In the second half the home side decided to take it down a notch and that did not do wonders for the game. In the final moments David Brooks pulled one back for Bournemouth, but the Cherries weren’t able to avoid yet another loss. Eddie Howe’s side are in 18th place on the table and have a three point gap to Watford, who will play West Ham United on Friday.
