Luis Suarez: ‘The league is impossible to win, our target is the Champions League’

FC Barcelona have given up on the title in La Liga, admits Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan striker has admitted that the Blaugrana’s will not be able to catch Real Madrid in the final two league games of the season and that their focus has moved towards the Champions League. The European tournament will return in August as Barcelona will face Napoli in their round of 16 second leg.

Barcelona went into the return of La Liga as league leaders. Three draws since the season restart have resulted in Real Madrid overtaking them and creating a four point gap. Real are now one win away from securing the title and could be celebrating their first La Liga win since 2017 on Thursday against Villarreal.

“If I am being honest, the league has become impossible to win,” he told an interview with Diario Sport. “We have lost opportunities, against Sevilla, Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid. Aspas’ goal in the Vigo game hurt a lot, as we lost a big chance. Now we must focus on the Champions League, that is our target.”

On August 8 Barcelona will play in their own Nou Camp against Napoli. The first match ended in a 1-1 draw and Antoine Griezmann‘s goals has given Barcelona an away goal advantage ahead of the second leg. If Barcelona beats Napoli, they will face either Chelsea or Bayern Munich, in their 13th successive Champions League quarter final.
