Southampton are looking to complete the signing of Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu at the start of next week. Spanish outlet AS reports that the Ghanaian defender is keen to complete a move to the Premier League ahead of a proposed move to French outfit Stade Rennes. Salisu will finish the season with Valladolid this week before traveling to England to finish the deal.
According to the report Salisu would feel more comfortable to join an English side because he does not speak French. Rennes had been in negotiations with Salisu for several weeks, but it now appears that the defender will be moving to the Premier League next season. It is believed that Southampton will pay around €12m for Salisu.
The defender’s contract was extended in May and will run until the summer of 2022. Despite the club reluctance to sell one of their most talented players, Valladolid have already signed a long-term replacement for Salisu having signed defender Javi Sanchez from Real Madrid.
