Benfica ready to splash the cash to sign Edinson Cavani on a free transfer

Portuguese giants Benfica are ready to make a huge offer to lure Edinson Cavani to the Liga NOS. The 33-year-old Uruguayan is a free agent since his contract at Paris Saint-Germain has expired and he has not found a new club. Benfica is keen on signing the experienced striker for next season.

Cavani rejected to sign a short-term contract at PSG allowing him to participate with the French club in the return of the Champions League in August. The former Napoli and Palermo striker has been linked with moves to the Serie A and Atletico Madrid, but hasn’t been able to reach an agreement due to his high wage demands.

However, Record reports that Benfica are willing to make a ‘huge financial’ sacrifice to land Cavani next season. The Uruguayan earned around €10m at PSG last season and is not willing to agree to a much lower salary. Benfica is believed to have offered an initial €5m salary which could rise up to 10m through a series of bonuses. It is unclear if Cavani is ready to accept the offer from the Portuguese giants.

Benfica already announced the return of their success coach Jorge Jesus recently, who won five Liga NOS titles with the Eagles. The club wants to continue to bolster their squad for next season in order to take the fight to FC Porto, who claimed the this season. The club will also be featuring in the Champions League and Benfica is hoping that signing Cavani will help them reach the knock-out stages.
