Former Arsenal and PSG coach set to become new Villarreal boss

Unai Emery is set to become the new permanent head coach of Villarreal ahead of the 2020/2021 campaign. Marca reports that Emery has already agreed personal terms with the yellow LaLiga club and that the confirmation is ‘only a formality’. A deal is expected to be announced on Monday.

Villareal’s current boss Javi Calleja has agreed to part with the club despite finishing in fifth place in LaLiga, securing a ticket for next season’s Europa League. Emery has been out of work since being sacked by Arsenal in November. The Spanish boss is believed to be keen on making a return to the Spanish leagues.

Emery has a wide range of experience in the Spanish league, having coached Almeria, Valencia and Sevilla. At Sevilla he won the Europa League before he moved to Paris Saint-Germain. He failed to deliver at the Parisians, who then decided to replace him with Thomas Tuchel. Later on he became the successor of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, but was sacked by the Gunners only 18 months later.
