Modric: ‘We knew we could keep winning without Cristiano Ronaldo’

Luka Modric says Real Madrid do miss Cristiano Ronaldo but the the club is strong enough to keep on winning without the Portugal star. Madrid won their 34th LaLiga title this season and their first title since 2017. Ronaldo left the club in 2018, joining Italian giants Juventus where he has won a single Serie A title and is looking to achieve a second title this season.

“There’s no need to talk about how important Cristiano was for Real Madrid”, Modric told Sportske Novosti. “But I must say that we were not afraid of not having him around, we were going to have the same expectations and we knew we would keep winning without him,” the midfielder added.

Modric was also asked about Zinedine Zidane, who put him on the bench for a small part of the season. “Zidane told me he was very happy with the job I was doing and my commitment so that I needed to keep working that way. He never questioned my capabilities, he just told me very honestly that he thought that the team needed something else. I accepted his view and worked hard.”

Therefore he praises his coach for his winning efforts. “Zidane once again proved he’s an excellent person. He makes us calm, he’s very polite when he approaches his players. There are always players who don’t play as much as they like and that makes sense, but Zidane’s approach affected how those players felt they were a part of this team so that they accepted their role. We have great people in this dressing room, nobody creates issues, we have no bad apples.”
