Birmingham City has embarrassed a section of their own fans after the club announced that they have retired Jude Bellingham‘s squad number 22. The 17-year-old confirmed his transfer to Borussia Dortmund earlier this week and on Thursday he played his final game for the club. Fans have questioned their club why the jersey has been retired.
Bellingham developed through the club’s own academy before he had his breakout season with the club this season. In total the midfielder has made 44 appearances for the club and apparently that was enough for the club take the decision to retire Bellinham’s squad number.
After the club announced the decision, fans have not responded too well. Some branded the call ‘the most embarrassing a football club has ever done’ while others said it was ‘tinpot’ and ‘ridiculous’. Earlier on the day Bellinham revealed he has been racially abused on social media after he confirmed his move to Dortmund.
He scored 4 goals and you’re retiring his number like he’s a legend of the club, Willian’s whole flow ffs
