Chelsea must offload centre-back before chasing Atletico Madrid star

Chelsea are having a major spending spree on the summer transfer market. After the club was banned from completing transfers last summer, the Blues have already spent around €100m to bring in Hakim Ziyech (Ajax) and Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) and have been linked with big money moves for Kai Havertz, a left-back and a new goalkeeper. And now the club is also keen on adding a new centre-back.

The Telegraph report that Chelsea have been looking at Atletico Madrid star Jose Maria Gimenez. Frank Lampard is unhappy with the performances of his defense all season long and his concerns became clear during Chelsea’s 5-3 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. Lampard feels that Gimenez would be the leader his defense needs.

However, with Chelsea’s expected spending spree this summer the club will need to offload at least one centre-back before they will be making a move for Gimenez. Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen seem the most likely candidates to leave the club this summer as Antonio Rudiger is Lampard’s first pick in the heart of defense.
