FC Barcelona could have signed Manchester United forward Anthony Martial on a bargain deal last season. The Athletic has claimed that the Blaugranas’ sports chief Eric Abidal had been offered Martial by his agent but decided against the decision to sign the forward as a long-term successor for Luis Suarez.
At the time Jose Mourinho was still in charge of Manchester United and the Portuguese did not offer Martial many first-team opportunities. The player’s agent had been looking around to find a new club for his client and had offered him out to Barcelona. The Spanish giants could have signed Martial for as little as €40m but decided not to make an offer.
At the time Abidal was worried about the striker’s mentality and rejected the offer from the player’s agent. Martial was frustrated by a lack of chances under Mourinho as the club was going through a period of transition. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken over at the club Martial has become the club’s first choice striker and he has scored 22 goals across all competitions this season.
