Edinson Cavani appears to be on his way to Portuguese giants Benfica. The Liga NOS club has opened talks with the 33-year-old striker and The Sun report that Cavani and his half-brother/agent Walter Guglielmone had positive talks with Benfica with a possible agreement being expected next week.
After Cavani left Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, the Uruguayan striker has been linked with several clubs in Spain and Italy. Last week it was speculated that Leeds United would be interested to sign the experienced forward after they secured the title in the EFL Championship and promotion to the Premier League.
It is believed that Cavani wants to play in the Champions League next season and that would be the case at Benfica. The lure of European football may be greater than having the chance to play in the Premier League with Leeds. It is reported that Benfica have offered Cavani a two-year contract.
