Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has stated he and his club are still very proud to have signed Joao Felix from Benfica. The young Portuguese starlet joined the Rojiblancos last summer in a club record €126m as a replacement for Antoine Griezmann. The Portugal international is considered as one of the biggest prospects in the world, but had a difficult first season at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Felix made 27 appearances in LaLiga in his first season, scoring just six goals and contributing one assist. However, Cerezo is convinced that the midfielder will show his potential next season. “It was not easy for him because it was the first season, he came with wonderful expectations and I think he has really met it,” Cerezo told during an interview with Marca.
“We are all happy with Joao Felix‘s performance. I think for next season it will not be a promise, it will be a fact. I hope that in these Champions League games, it really highlights how great a footballer he is. I think he is very excited and happy that it will be played in Lisbon. You have to think that he is 20 years old, he is a player with a promising future and that we are indisputably proud to have signed him.”
