FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is adamant that Lionel Messi will be staying with the club beyond 2021. The Argentinian forward’s contract will expire at the end of next season and there have been many rumours that Messi is preparing to leave the club. Bartomeu, however, says that he expects an agreement with his captain soon.
“Messi has said many times that he wants to retire here and I have no doubt that he will renew,” he told Mundo Deportivo. It has been suggested that Messi wants to leave Barcelona due to his tense relationship with Bartomeu. The forward openly criticised his club for a perceived lack of support for the players.
This has alerted several clubs including Manchester City and Internazionale to possibly make a move for Messi once he rejects Barcelona’s contract offer. But with Bartomeu’s comments it seems that the star forward will sign a new deal before the end of the summer as he looks to retire at the Camp Nou.
