Atletico Madrid are interested in signing defender Jan Vertonghen following his release from Tottenham Hotspur. Mundo Deportivo reports that the Spanish giants have made en enquiry for the Belgian defender amid rumours that Italian side AS Roma are also interested in signing the free agent.
Vertonghen emerged as a candidate at the Romans as a possible replacement for Chris Smalling. The English defender is on loan from Manchester United and while the Red Devils want to sell Smalling, they have failed to reach an agreement with Roma. Therefore it is expected that Smalling will return to England.
Meanwhile Atletico Madrid are hoping to land the former Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur defender this summer. The 33-year-old can play as a central defender and as a left-back, making him an interesting signing for Atletico manager Diego Simeone. Vertonghen made 315 first-team appearances for Spurs spread over eight seasons but has now left North London.
