Ralf Rangnick has decided to leave RB Leipzig a week after he failed to reach an agreement with AC Milan on becoming their new manager and sporting director. Rangnick was in charge as technical director at Leipzig and he worked for the Red Bull concern for over eight years, guiding the team from the lower regions to the top of the Bundesliga and the quarter finals of the Champions League.
The club announces that it was Rangnick himself who requested his contract to be terminated. It is believed he had been thinking about leaving the club since last summer. “Now the time has come to end my time here at the club. I would like to thank everyone at the club for their support and confidence”, Rangnick said in a statement.
Until last week it was expected that Rangnick would be joining AC Milan in order to help the club rebuild. While the contracts were almost signed, Milan decided to pull the plug from the deal and extend the contract of Stefano Pioli. It was then expected that Rangnick would stay at Leipzig or the Red Bull concern as an overseer for all their affiliates. The German, however, decided to call it a day.
