Jan Vertonghen is on his way to AS Roma, reports Corriere dello Sport on Sunday. The Belgian defender left Tottenham Hotspur last week after his contract expired and he has been looking for a new club with several clubs being linked. The report claims that Vertonghen has reached a personal agreement with AS Roma.
In Rome Vertonghen is set to replace Chris Smalling. The English defender spent a full season on loan from Manchester United and is now set for a return to the English giants after they failed to reach an agreement with Roma to extend the loan for a second season.
The Belgium international has been negotiating with Roma for the past week and according to Corriere dello Sport he will sign a three year contract worth €3m per season. Earlier on Vertonghen was linked to Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Ajax and Internazionale. His choice, however, appears to be for AS Roma.
