Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to Iker Casillas. The 39-year-old goalkeeper officially announced his retirement earlier this week after he already stopped playing after he suffered a heart-attack in 2019. Mourinho and Casillas have had their differences while both at Real Madrid, but the Portuguese manager says that is all in the past.
“His intelligence and maturity meant that we always have respected each other and years later, even been able to become good friends,” Mourinho told AS. “Iker is one of the greatest goalkeepers in Real Madrid’s history, in Spain’s history and world football’s history.” In his final season for Madrid, Mourinho dropped the goalkeeper for Diego Lopez.
But despite the two having troubles back then, Mourinho and Casillas have made amends. “With him, we won the league which broke all records and we also had some difficult moments because of a decision which I took – a professional decision, not a personal one, to play someone else in goal.”
