Gianfranco Zola didn’t expect Juventus appointing Andrea Pirlo as their new manager after they sacked Maurizio Sarri last week. The Bianconeri decided to part ways with the 61-year-old manager after he failed to impress in the Champions League and recording their worst defensive record in the Serie A in years despite winning the Serie A. Shortly after Sarri was sacked Juventus announced the appointment of Pirlo.
And that appointment has surprised Zola. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised by this,” Zola told Sky Sport Italia. “It’s fascinating and if the project works, it’ll go down as a huge success story for the club. It’s not an easy job, though, as Juventus are asking to win in a certain way.”
“This is a courageous move from the club and based on the quality of the man, but Pirlo will need their support going forward. It’s not simple, but I do think he can have real success.” Juventus were eliminated by Olympique Lyon in the round of 16 of the Champions League on away goals (2-2).
