Jose Mourinho has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson advised him to buy Dele Alli while he was in charge of Manchester United. The Portuguese manager was sacked in November 2018 after he failed to bring success to the Red Devils. Now at Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho has looked back at his time at United and said Sir Alex never told him to buy certain players except once.
According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho said: “Sir Alex Ferguson gave me only one piece of advice in two-and-a-half years, ‘Buy Dele Alli, that guy with that mentality, the way he plays, the aggression in his mind, that guy is a Manchester United player, buy that guy.’ He has an eye for players and he told me, ‘buy that player’ but he is not a good trainer. We have to find the right motivation for the guy.”
During his time at Manchester United Mourinho made 11 major signings. He brought in Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot, Romelu Lukaku, Fred, Alexis Sanchez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant. The Portuguese manager spent hundreds of millions on new players but failed to win the Premier League in his two full seasons.
