Arsenal defender David Luiz is looking to miss out on the start of the new Premier League season. The Brazilian central defender could be sidelined for as much as six weeks due to an injury to his neck. It looks certain that Luiz will be missing out on Arsenal‘s opening match against Fulham on Saturday but the Gunners fear that Luiz will be out for a longer period.
Luiz was expected to start for Arsenal in their first match of the season as the former Chelsea defender formed the central defender in Mikel Arteta’s 3-4-3 formation. However, he has been unable to train for the entire week and the medical staff at Arsenal fear that the injury could take out Luiz much longer than anticipated.
The Athletic reports that Luiz will undergo medical examinations on his neck later this week as Arsenal are hoping for a swift recovery. Luiz’s injury could also affect the club’s activity on the transfer market. Rob Holding is expected to leave Arsenal to join Newcastle United on a season long loan but that transfer could be put on hold if Luiz is out for six weeks.
