Aston Villa have completed the signing of Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The 28-year-old goalkeeper, who helped the Gunners win the FA Cap last season, has agreed to sign a four-year deal with the Villans. Reports from England have claimed that Villa have paid around €17m for the goalkeeper and that the overall value over the move could rise up to €22m through a series of player bonuses.
Villa boss Dean Smith is happy to welcome the goalkeeper: “We are really pleased with the signing of our new goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning top side. We moved for Emi when we saw the opportunity, as it is rare to be able to buy a top class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age and who can therefore be a key player for our Club for the long term.”
The Argentinian joined Arsenal in 2010 in a €1.5m deal from Independiente. Throughout his career with Arsenal he spent several seasons on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Getafe and Reading. Last season he acted as a backup for Bernd Leno but was forced to step in as the club’s first choice goalkeeper when the German injured his knee. Martinez had an impressive spell in goal, helping the team win the FA Cup.
