Luis Suarez is set to stay at FC Barcelona next season. The 33-year-old has been told by head coach Ronald Koeman and the club that he would be forced to leave this summer but it now appears that there has been a massive u-turn on that decision. Barcelona are having troubles signing a replacement for Suarez and according to Ovación Digital the striker is now set to stay at the club for the 2020-21 campaign.
Shortly after Koeman was appointed the new boss told Suarez that he would not feature in his plans next season. The Dutch coach intends to use Antoine Griezmann as a central striker and has also been experimenting with Ansu Fati as a false nine. Koeman then wanted Memphis Depay to replace Suarez in the squad of Barcelona but the club is unable to generate the funds needed to sign the Olympique Lyon captain.
Meanwhile, Suarez is having troubles completing his transfer to Juventus. The Uruguayan needs to obtain an Italian passport as the Bianconeri have already used up all of the non-EU spots in their squad. He has applied for a passport but the process has been progressing slowly and the Italians now fear the deal will not go through before the transfer deadline on October 6. Reports now claim that Juventus have already agreed terms with AS Roma’s Edin Dzeko as an alternative to Suarez.
In recent months Atletico Madrid, Inter Miami and his former employer Ajax have been put forward as candidates to sign Suarez. However, none of these clubs have pushed their interest through and it appears that Suarez will be staying with Barcelona for at least another year. Koeman will therefore grant Suarez a new chance on the first team but with the side note that Griezmann is his first choice striker at the start of the season.
