Manchester City made an official approach for Antoine Griezmann shortly after Lionel Messi confirmed he would not be leaving FC Barcelona this summer. The English giants were heavily linked to signing the Argentinian forward but after he decided to stay on at the Nou Camp for the 2020-21 season, City immediately made an approach for Griezmann, reports RAC1.
The English giants are in the market to sign a new striker as Sergio Aguero’s tenure at the club is coming to its end. The 32-year-old striker has one year left on his contract at it looks very likely that Aguero will leave the club on a free transfer next summer to complete a return to his boyhood club Independiente in Argentina.
Griezmann wasn’t originally on Man City’s shortlist but the decision of Messi to stay on at Barcelona could have changed the situation. It has always been suggested that Griezmann and Messi have a poor relationship and with the Barca captain staying on at the club could have meant Griezmann would be open to leave. However, the report also states that both Barcelona and Griezmann have rejected the approach of Man City.
