Atletico Madrid have emerged as the absolute favourites to sign Luis Suarez from FC Barcelona after Juventus dropped out. The Italians were keen on the 33-year-old but canceled their interest after it was clear Suarez’s passport process would not be completed in time for the end of the transfer window. Atletico have reportedly talked to Suarez and have agreed terms in principe, reports Mundo Deportivo.
The report states that Suarez has been surprised by the constant communication and backing from Atletico and he has given his agent the green light to complete a deal if possible. There is, however, one major problem and that is Diego Costa. The striker needs to be sold before Atletico can push through their offer for Suarez but the club is struggling to find a buyer for the Spaniard and fear they might fail in selling him.
Meanwhile, Barcelona have made it known to Suarez that they will not terminate his contract. There had been rumours that the club wanted to cancel the striker’s contract but after he demanded his yearly wage of €14m to be paid in full they dropped that possibility. It is reported that Barcelona want at least €10m for Suarez to generate the funds needed to sign new players.
