Frank de Boer is the new head coach of the Netherlands. The Dutch football association KNVB has confirmed that the former Atalanta United, Crystal Palace, Internazionale and Ajax coach has been appointed with a contract until the 2022 World Cup 2022 in Qatar. De Boer is the successor of Ronald Koeman who left his job as coach to join FC Barcelona.
Koeman was expected to lead the Netherlands at the European Championships in 2020 but that tournament was postponed until the summer of 2021. At the end of the summer it became clear that he was the leading candidate to replace Quique Setien and Barcelona. The former player of the Blaugranas then was granted to fulfill his dream to be the head coach of Barcelona.
This left the Dutch national team without a coach. Dwight Lodeweges was appointed as the nations caretaker manager until the they found a suitable replacement. Former Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard was put forward as a candidate while there had also been reports that former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was interested in the job.
At the end the KNVB have decided to appoint De Boer as the new national coach. The 53-year-old was unemployed after he was sacked by Major League Soccer side Atalanta United earlier this year. De Boer enjoyed a rich playing career as he played for Ajax, FC Barcelona, Galatasaray and Rangers FC. As a coach he was the assistant of Bert van Marwijk in 2010 with Dutch team that reached the World Cup final.
After that he took on the head coach job at Ajax, leading them to four Eredivisie titles in five seasons. He left Ajax after the club lost his possible fifth league title on the final day of the season in 2015. He then joined Internazionale but was sacked by the Italians within 2 months. A season later he joined Crystal Palace but after seven straight losses in the Premier League he was sacked for the second time in his career. In July 2020 he was sacked for the third straight time after he failed to impress at Atalanta United.
