FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu will be remembered as one of the club’s greatest ever leaders, says Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo. Bartomeu will be leaving Barcelona in 2021 as his second term will come to and end. His spell with the club could end earlier as the vote of no confidence has passed the needed 20.000 signatures.
The position of Bartomeu at Barcelona has come under great scrutiny over the past few months following a disastrous season. Not only did the club fail to win a single trophy for the first time in ten years, the transfer saga involving Lionel Messi did not aid in the support Bartomeu had. The president has also been accused of corruption by Barcelona police, though he continues to deny such allegations.
Despite all the criticism, Cerezo praises Bartomeu: “Bartomeu is a great president and in the future, he will be regarded as one of the great presidents of Barcelona, where there have been many, but among them will be Bartomeu,” Cerezo said, as per Marca. “Above all, Bartomeu, has a great virtue, which is that he is a very great and excellent person.”
Bartomeu has been the Barcelona president since 2014, when he replaced Sandro Rosell, who was forced to resign due to a corruption scandal. He was re-elected as president in 2016 and will now have to end his tenure at the club. He will be able to nominate a candidate of his own and that candidate will face the other presidential candidates, including Joan Laporta and Victor Font.
