Memphis Depay has been filling transfer headlines over the past few weeks. The Dutch forward is considered as a leading candidate to join FC Barcelona and it has been reported he has already reached a personal agreement with the Spanish club. However, Barcelona lack the funds to sign Depay and that has given his club Olympique Lyon the chance to keep the forward in France.
Club president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed on Friday that Lyon have offered Depay a new contract. “It is clear Barcelona’s financial situation prevents them from signing Memphis”, Aulas told Le Progress. “We have made Depay an offer he can’t refuse. It is a great offer.”
The president isn’t sure if Depay wants to sign a new deal. “But nothing is impossible. At least we have tried everything in our power to keep him at Lyon. If he decides to leave we will act on that.” Depay has entered the final year of his contract and he will be allowed to negotiate a free transfer with other clubs from January 2021.
