Chelsea coach Frank Lampard faced his former mentor Jose Mourinho on Tuesday as the Blues faced Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The English manager revealed he had a laugh at the Portuguese manager as Mourinho has the tendency to target the referee ahead of instructing his players how to play.
Lampard played under Mourinho at Chelsea and insisted that the two have a very good relationship. However, he also laughed at the way his former manager behaves against referees. “We were having some fun on the line. I get on well with Jose and I think he said that to me,” Lampard said post-match. Chelsea lost the match on penalties with Mason Mount missing the decisive penalty.
“I commented on the fact that he seemed to speak more with the referee than he speaks with his players so it is just a moment with us. I have a huge respect for Jose, no matter what he says on the touchline. I think he was feeling the sense of the first half and how it was. All was well at the end of the game and that will never change.”
