Former FC Barcelona forward Rivaldo says his old club should have put more effort in signing a new striker this summer after they decided to part ways with Luis Suarez. The 33-year-old was considered a surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp and he was eventually sold to Atletico Madrid for a €6m transfer fee. Rivaldo says that Barcelona should have signed a decent replacement for Suarez.
Barcelona wanted Memphis Depay from Olympique Lyon but couldn’t generate the funds needed to land the Dutch international. “Barcelona should have made more of an effort to sign a new striker to replace Suarez, especially since they have allowed a player to leave who is still extraordinary and who clearly has the qualities to still be key. But now it is too late to complain, because the market is closed.”
“I’m sure that in many league games, Barcelona have a team that is well ahead of the rest of the teams in the competition. But he [Suarez] will be sorely missed in the Champions League or in those tough matches against Real Madrid, Atletico [Madrid], Sevilla“, the former Brazilian forward added. Barcelona are still interested in signing Depay and are expected to make a new effort to land the forward during the January window.
