Napoli have been handed a heavy punishment for not showing up for the Serie A match against Juventus two weeks ago. Napoli did not travel to Turin to play against Juventus after a coronavirus breakout in the squad and staff. Several players and members off the staff were struck by the virus and the local health authorities blocked the team from travelling to Turin.
The Italian Serie A have confirmed that Napoli have been handed a 3-0 loss and they have been given a one point penalty. In the rules of the Serie A it states that a team will have to show up for a match even if there have been positive tests for the coronavirus. The players who have been tested negative are expected to play and a game will only be postponed if a club is unable to field more than 13 players.
“There are protocols that are very clear for situations like this, that there would be one or two positive cases in the match selection, ”said Juve president Andrea Agnelli. “Juventus also discovered two COVID cases on Saturday, so we all went into the bubble and were therefore ready to play this match.” At this point it is unclear if Napoli will appeal against the punishment.
