The crisis at FC Barcelona continues as the players of the Spanish club have written an angry letter to club president Josep Maria Bartomeu following the club’s intention to reduce the player wages again. Spanish outlet Sport suggests that the players of Barcelona were informed of the wage reduction through an e-mail while they were on international duty. The players have reportedly responded angrily.
Barcelona have financial problems as the club is suffering much from the coronavirus pandemic, which has kept fans from visiting matches since March. The club revealed that they have suffered a €90m loss over the 2019-20 season and that the pandemic has cost them over €200m in match revenues. With the lockdown continuing in the 2020-21 campaign, Barcelona were forced to push through yet another wage reduction.
While the players acknowledge the problems the club is in at the moment, they are very angry about the way the board have informed them of the new reduction. It has also been claimed that the players are very unhappy that none of the players have been involved in the reduction process and they feel they are pushing through the wage reduction outside of the players. The squad has now sent an angry letter to the board, emphasizing their dissatisfaction with the way the process has been led.
