Chelsea were reportedly keen on signing Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during the summer transfer window, a report by Calcio Mercato has claimed. The AC Milan star topped the Blues wish list to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal but eventually decided to stay with his boyhood club. Chelsea then signed 28-year-old Edouard Mendy from Stade Rennes.
However, it has now been suggested that Chelsea have not forgotten about Donnarumma at all. The 21-year-old goalkeeper has entered the final year of his contract and talks between the player and the club have been progressing slowly. Milan hope to tie Donnarumma down on a long-term contract but the goalkeeper could be interested in a switch to the Premier League.
Donnarumma will be available for contract talks from January 1 and Milan fear they won’t be able to extend his contract before the new year. That could mean they will be forced to sell the goalkeeper during the January window or riks that he will walk out of the door as a free agent after the season. The report claims that Chelsea are preparing to offer Kepa as a makeweight to Milan and the Blues are currently talking to the Spanish goalkeeper to have him accept a move in January.
